Title Rural Change: Markets, Governance and Quality of Life
Investigator(s) Thilmany, DD;
Department Agricultural and Resource Economics
Objectives 1. Identify and analyze ongoing and potential changes in rural labor markets and the impacts of migration, commuting, and workforce development policies on rural labor markets . 2. Investigate the potential for rural development policies based on entrepreneurship, industrial clustering, value-added and nontraditional agricultural businesses and analyze the spatial implications of industrial restructuring on employment and earnings. 4. Develop a better understanding of the role of amenities in rural development and the impact of economic and social changes on the quality of life in rural communities.
Approach For labor market analysis, I will continue to use secondary data sources from USDA, the Department of Labor and Colorado Employment to anlayze market dynamics, particularly as they relate to the integration of Hispanic immigrants, and the potential Beveridge curve influence in rural Colorado. For rural development led by value-added and other business development, I will continue to use survey and food data to analyze market potential for a variety of business enterprises that would help rural areas benefit from their agricultural and natural resources. In terms of amenities, the importance of amenities on consumer, household and community-level decision makers will be integrated into the analyses of potential business and industry models.
