Foliage is a glossy dark green, with simple, alternate leaves. Leaves appear soon after flowering and turn yellow to red in fall. | |

Flowers are scarlet, about 1 inch in diameter, and occur in clusters along the stems in early spring. | |

Fruit is apple-like, 2-4 inches in diameter, edible and appeals to both man and wildlife. Its pinkish-red color turns to yellow in fall. Can be made into jelly. | |

Stems are thorny and tangled, making this
plant a good choice to use to discourage traffic. |
