John Cabot is a very winter-hardy climbing rose. It can be trained to climb a post or left to form a large, arching shrub. Canes are strong and grow to 9 feet. Foliage is a glossy green with good resistance to powdery mildew and black spot. The blooms are large semi-double, with an average of 40 petals, that are borne in clusters of 3 to 10 from June until fall frost. They are a deep pink to medium red color, and have a slight fragrance. John Cabot was the first climbing rose of the Explorer series (named for explorers who had carved out routes through Canada and into the Arctic from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centureies), released in 1978.
