Columnar English Oak

		*Columnar English Oak (Quercus robur 'Fastigiata')* A native to Europe, this oak is upright and narrowly columnar in form. It grows slowly to 50 to 60 feet in height but only 10 to 15 feet in width and makes a good substitute for lombardy poplar. Prefering full sun, the columnar English oak has moderate water needs and is hardy to zone 4. It tolerates both acidic and alkaline soils.

		Foliage consists of alternate, simple leaves, 2½ to 5 inches in length. The color is a deep bluish-green. Fall color is yellow when there is any, but most often leaves just turn to brown and are held on the tree well into winter.

		Fruit is a small, elongated 1-inch acorn, borne singly and in clusters of up to five.

		Bark is gray-brown with furrows and ridges.
