Digitalis x mertonensis Foxglove
(Scrophhulariacaeae) Foxgloves have basal leaf rosettes with
alternate stem leaves. Bear inflated, tubular, bel-shaped SOMEwhat 2-lipped flowers
that are often spotted inside. Flowers are yellow, white, and some of th annual
(Foxy) types are carmine-pink D. x mertonensis bears racemes of pinkish-buff
flowers up to 2.5" long in early summer. Grow to 36 inches. |

Penstemon 'Husker Red' Husker
Red penstemon (Scrophulariaceae-figwort family.
"Scrophs" include Digitalis, Verbascum, Linaria, Antirrhinum, Veronica,
Ciascia and Bacopa). Penstemons have opposite linear leaves, racemes of
tubular-funnel or tubular-bell shaped flowers which are 2-liped: upper is usually 2-lobed
and bottom 3-lobed. Husker Red has maroon leaves and white flowers. This plant was chosen
Perennial Plant of the Year in 1996. |

Centaurea montana Mountain bluet
(Asteraceae). The knapweeds bear spherical or hemispherical
flowerheads with tubular and usually deeply lobed florets. Each flowerhead has a
conspicuous involucre with CONSPICUOUS overlapping bracts. Some of the problematic noxious
weeds in Colorado are in this genus (Spotted and Russian knapweed). Mountain bluet is from
central Europe. It is rhizomatous and self seeds readily. It forms mats of leaves with
loose stems to 18 inches. The blue, 2" flowerheads have a reddish/violet tinge. Bloom
is through mid-summer. |
