By Roberta Tolan, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension Agent Some of the most beautiful garden flowers are produced from spring-planted bulbs, corms, and roots. These include amaryllis, canna, callas, dahlias, gladiolus, lilies, and tuberous begonias. Buy bulbs, corms and roots early while the selection is good. If you buy packaged bulbs, rather than those loose in bins, you can be assured that the flowers will be true to their labels. Be sure, however, that you can see the bulbs through the package. Select the largest and firmest specimens, as you will discover a direct relationship between the size of the bulb and the size of the flower. Photograph courtesy of Judy Sedbrook. |
