LIBERAL ARTS MAJOR
In the tradition of a liberal arts education, this major provides students with broad training from a variety of the specific disciplines within the College of Liberal Arts.
The curriculum offers freedom to shape the individual educational experience to a student's particular needs and interests while providing important focus by requiring students to complete a concentration in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, American Studies, or International Studies, with four Options: Asian Studies, European Studies, Middle East/North Africa Studies, and Latin American Studies. This major leads to a bachelor of arts degree.
For checksheets or to schedule an appointment with academic advising for Liberal Arts, please come to the College of Liberal Arts Dean's Office, C 138 Clark Building or call (970) 491-5421.
The Liberal Arts major provides flexibility for you to choose courses while at the same time providing intriguing and challenging direction in one of four concentrations--social sciences, arts and humanities, American studies, or international studies. You should use that flexibility to create a program that enlivens and deepens your educational experience, establishes a solid foundation for graduate programs, and/or prepares you for future careers.
Other options for liberal arts majors include:
A Second Major
A student may elect to complete the requirements for two majors concurrently. A second major is listed on your diploma and on your transcript. If you are interested in pursuing a second major, you should pick up a checksheet and discuss the requirements with an adviser in the department of the second major.
Two majors within the departments in the College of Liberal Arts may be finished within four years, if a student plans carefully and if both majors have significant elective credits as part of their academic requirements.
Each of these degrees requires a minimum of 120 credits with a minimum of 42 credits in upper-division courses.
Students may complete more than one major, a major and one or more minors, or a major and another academic program of study.
In addition to completing the requirements for a major, students also may complete one or more minors. More info...
Interdisciplinary Programs
In addition to completing a major, you may opt to pursue one of the University's numerous interdisciplinary studies programs. Completion of the requirement is noted on the transcript, and the student receives a certificate of completion.
Licensure To Teach in the State of Colorado
Those students wishing to be licensed as secondary school teachers must complete an academic degree program in an approved area of study and the professional education requirements. Students apply for admission to the teacher licensure program at the School of Education, Room 111, Education Building.
Preparation for Graduate or Professional Study
Majors in the College of Liberal Arts prepare undergraduate students for a variety of graduate or professional study options. In addition to pursuing an advanced degree in the same field as the undergraduate major, students from a variety of liberal arts majors pursue study in areas such as law, theology, and business administration.
In addition to gaining a broad, liberal arts education, students considering a law degree should take courses in written and oral communication, logic and critical thinking, and accounting. Also, many courses from the humanities and social sciences are relevant to the study of law.
Preparation for MBA programs includes courses in economics (principles and intermediate theory), statistics, calculus, logic and critical thinking, written and oral communication, and foreign languages. Recently, there has been a concerted effort by business schools to attract humanities majors, and some offer fellowships.
An International Career
Any of the Study Abroad programs would be an excellent option for students to pursue, as would the international studies concentration in the Liberal Arts major.
Students interested in learning about cultures can take combinations of courses. More info...
